The Value of a Numerical Analysis

Numbers Add Up the Benefits for Coaches and Swimmers

For many decades, the only numbers typically used to assess swimming performance were the ones that appeared on a stopwatch – the performance time. Two additional factors became widely used in the past few decades – stroke rate and stroke length. More recently, technology has made it possible to quickly and easily measure a number of other factors related to performance. Both coaches and swimmers can benefit from this information.

Technology has progressed so that it is possible to provide swimmers and coaches with quantitative (numerical) data for immediate feedback on the pool deck. These numbers represent factors directly related to performance and can make an individual’s strengths and weaknesses more apparent. Data from computerized digital technology can transform the sport of swimming by replacing a vague, qualitative assessment with an accurate, quantitative evaluation.
